Active Bystander Training

What is Active Bystander Training?

An “active bystander” describes somebody who takes positive action to prevent or reduce harm to others when they encounter prejudice, discrimination, harassment, or identity-based violence. Anybody can be an active bystander – whether in moments of acute danger or in the actions they take to tackle long-term injustices.

This interactive 3-hour online or in-person course is led by the identity-based violence prevention charity, Protection Approaches, and was developed in partnership with the Britain’s East and Southeast Asian Network. The expert-led sessions guide small groups of up to 30 participants through a series of discussions to explore how they can play a role in tackling identity-based harms in their community, school, or workplace.

The content:

The content, developed in consultation with experts and practitioners, is tailored to the needs of each group. The training has a minimum duration of 3 hours but can also be delivered over a half or full day. Content includes:

  • What it means to be an active bystander: Through group discussion, participants explore what being an active bystander means to them.
  • Standing up for victims: Working through a series of scenarios, participants consider and learn what they can do to safely and confidently reduce harm when they encounter prejudice, discrimination, harassment, or identity-based violence such as a racist attack in a supermarket or an inappropriate comment from a colleague or friend.
  • Principles and strategies: Facilitators share a series of principles and strategies that participants can consider if they encounter prejudice, discrimination, harassment, or identity-based violence.
  • Proactive prevention: Returning to the scenarios, participants reflect on the root causes of prejudice and discrimination before discussing ways they could contribute to dismantling those root causes and building safer, more inclusive communities.

What participants say

This training was developed at the request of community members who told us they did not feel they had the skills or confidence to be an active bystander. Since developing the sessions, we have run them with more than 5,000 participants. We have received hundreds of positive comments about these sessions, which we are happy to share with anyone thinking about taking part. Some include:

"Essential skills and awareness, even if you think “you know it all”. Worth every minute of my time."

"A brilliant course that combined an excellent balance of the  theory/law/principles with tangible actionable responses. Skillful,  well-paced and compassionate facilitation, which made it safe to explore  these important but challenging issues openly and in a way that built  our confidence."

"This is such a great training: the opportunities to explore different scenarios suggested so many ways to be an active bystander... I feel so much more confident that some of things I’d already thought about do actually work and I discovered so many more suggestions from  participants and from the facilitator for what to do and how to be."

"We came to the workshop with an awareness of the identity based violence  / hate crimes that take place everyday in our city. We finished the workshop feeling empowered to respond and support those who experience harm. As the person who'd booked the training I hadn't anticipated that the morning would also be a great way to build team among our community group who already know each other well."

"Easily the best training session we've ever had. Incredibly engaging and informative. I now feel confident in putting this learning into practice and becoming a positive active bystander."
