Preventing identity-based violence requires more than understanding harm. It requires understanding how stronger, more connected and more resilient societies are built, and how people and communities at risk can be better protected. Our work explores not only why violence, prejudice and division emerge, but also what strengthens trust, belonging, democratic resilience and community cohesion. Over the past decade, we have helped shape understanding of identity-based violence as part of a wider set of social challenges, connecting issues too often treated in isolation, from hate crime and violent extremism to atrocity crimes, democratic resilience and community cohesion. By bringing together insights from across these fields, we help communities, policymakers and practitioners better understand both the risks that drive division and the conditions that protect people, strengthen communities and enable societies to thrive.
Our work is grounded in the belief that the best evidence comes from bringing different forms of knowledge together. We combine community experience, institutional practice and expertise from fields including human rights, conflict prevention, social psychology, national security, political science and public policy to better understand identity-based violence and how it can be prevented. Through partnerships with communities, leading universities, researchers and practitioners in the UK and internationally, we generate evidence that is rigorous, grounded and designed for action. By connecting these different perspectives, we expand not only our understanding of identity-based violence, but the practical options available to prevent it.

In Stoke-on-Trent, we carried out a large-scale community listening exercise, engaging more than 1,300 residents in their everyday environments such as markets, cafés, parks, pubs, community centres and places of worship, to understand their lived experiences and the real drivers of local tension. The findings informed ten practical priorities, helping shape Stoke-on-Trent's new social cohesion strategy.

Under the flagship research programme we led with the UK National Security Secretariat, we examined the changing nature of identity-based harms across the UK and Europe. Combining high-level convening, national polling, frontline engagement and international fieldwork, involving more than 250 experts, we produced a clear, multi-level diagnosis of risk, alongside actionable recommendations.

Since 2015, our atrocity prevention programme has worked to strengthen how the UK predicts and prevents mass atrocities. Through research and briefings for government, parliament and civil society, we make the case for embedding 'prevention thinking' across policy, and for a dedicated national strategy, connecting agendas too often treated as unrelated.

Commissioned by London Resilience, we coordinate the London Resilience Equalities Partnership, which brings equalities groups into the heart of the capital's emergency planning. Shaped by our consultation with 80 equalities and resilience stakeholders, it ensures the needs of marginalised communities inform how London prepares for and responds to crises.
